Transportation Security AUG 19 2003 FOIA No: TSA 03-354 Russ Kick Dear Mr. Kick: This letter is in response to your letter of March 11, 2003 requesting pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) information/documents concerning the events of September 11, 2001. At this time, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is continuing its search for and review of records relating to September 11th. Because of the large number of responsive records we have located thus far (hundreds of thousands of pages) and the fact that the search involves multiple locations (including field offices), this process has taken significantly longer than we had hoped. To ensure that we do not release any records that would interfere with ongoing law enforcement proceedings relating to the events of September 11th, TSA is consulting with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the two Federal agencies with primary responsibility for the investigation and prosecution of these crimes. TSA may also need to consult with other Federal agencies about certain records. Once this consultation is finished, TSA will be able to determine which records may be released. At this time we are not able to provide you with an estimated date of completion because we do not know how long the consultation and review process will take. We estimate it will be at least six months until TSA is able to determine the releasability of any September 11th records. Narrowing the scope of your request, however, might permit us to respond more quickly.
